Discussing Serious Illness With Patients
Dr. Steve Swedlund, WSU Departments of Family Medicine and Geriatrics, will be leading two workshops for residents. Residents from any DAGMEC-affiliated residency program are welcome to attend. You can register your residents for either session. Each session will be limited to 40 participants, and slots will be filled on a first-come basis.
A few details about the course
The course is geared toward R1 residents (but any level is welcome). Enroll all of your residents or select just a few.
The program is practical and tied directly to the ACGME & AOA Competencies (Professionalism and Communication).
Learner objectives
The learner shall:
Describe the ideal elements of an advance care planning conversation
Demonstrate use of "Ask-Tell-Ask" technique for ensuring patient understanding
Demonstrate understanding of cognitive versus emotional channels
Demonstrate how to deliver serious information to a patient

Register your residents by emailing the resident’s name and e-mail address to heidi.sowl@wspi.org.
Each program should inform its residents that they are enrolled and expected to attend.
